Dirty Truths: Blogging

This is a series pinpointing various aspects of tumblr and the “tumblr writing community” as many of us like to call ourselves. This series showcases my opinions, and my opinions only, as a girl who likes to write things and post them on tumblr. They’re blunt, they entail the usage of a lot of curse words, and they’re always biased. My opinions tend to be that way. My holding these opinions doesn’t mean I dislike you if you find yourself doing the things I rage against — it just means I sigh, maybe even groan, and scroll right on past. These are not smiling, welcoming, sugar-coated messages of encouragement. These are Dirty Truths.

Dirty Truths: Breaking the Fourth Wall

I’ve had a handful of messages from a handful of people who have made a handful of statements about my “dirty truths” series. It is perhaps the case that others of you feel the same, and just haven’t taken the time to message me about it. So here, I’ll just go ahead and let you all know the dirty truth behind “dirty truths”:

  • People have said that the series seems jaded. Well, yes, yes it is. One does not simply use a blogging platform (or, indeed, any other website) for over a year without getting jaded to some of the activities and habits of other users. (When was the last time you made fun of Facebook, or someone on Facebook? Yeah.)
  • People have also said they don’t agree with me. That’s cool. Says right there in the introduction these are my opinions. I don’t expect everybody to agree with me. I’d be worried if you did. I’m not interested in arguing these points either. It’s a goddamn free blogging website. I don’t really care enough about any of these things to give a shit if I’m right or wrong. Also, it’s an opinion.
  • People have also said that people should not worry about these things and just write. Thank you for restating my closing tagline, which is “Fuck [insert thing I’m raging against]. Just fucking write.”
  • People have also expressed amazement that other people actually care about these things. I know, right? But they do! It’s shocking.
  • People have also said I made them feel bad because they do something I raged against in the series, and that they’ll never do it again. I’m sorry you felt bad. That wasn’t my intention. But I’m glad you’ve seen the light and are endeavoring to be less annoying.
  • People have apologized for having done something I’ve raged against. Meh, I’m not bovvered. If all these things truly enraged me to the extent depicted in the series, I would have unfollowed everybody and/or deactivated by now. Which brings me to the final point that’s been raised —
  • People think I’m being serious. Please allow me to introduce you to my sense of humor. I am dry, snarky, vulgar, layered, and indirect. Of course, there’s an element of truth in all the posts in the series. No joke is funny unless it contains an element of truth; and sometimes, the funnier the joke, the more painful the truth contained therein. But it’s still a fucking joke. Lighten up. If we can’t make fun of ourselves, what’s left?
